bride surprised!
March 10, 2010
This weekend was a nice long one for me. After work on Friday, I had my Farewell Happy Hour with friends from UArts. We went to Roy’s Restaurant for their “Aloha Hour” (how appropriate) and had Mai Tais, and other incredible food! ^_^ Perfect place to celebrate, and the waitstaff was very nice considering there were easily 15 people in my group! Thank you to those of you that came!
The next morning we got up to go to State College to visit with family. Eric said that my father had called the other day and asked we fill up some growlers to bring home, so we wouldn’t be leaving until around 11:30. About a 45 minutes late leaving town, we were on the road. I got a call from my dad who was checking in to see where we were and said that we would have to meet at my grandmother’s house since they were already there (instead of going to my parents house like usual).
When we pulled up there were cars *everywhere.* There were some that I recognized, though not ones I’d expect to see for a Saturday afternoon gathering at my grandmothers. I looked at Eric and asked if he thought we were going to be surprised with an engagement party. He just shook his head, rather expressionless, and mentioned that those cars might be for a neighbor’s thing. We walked inside and there were people, food and decorations everywhere! I walked in and saw my aunts and peeked towards the living room and saw faces I hadn’t seen in quite some time then was overwhelmed with hellos. I was still in shock and nervous I only peeked into the living room instead of walking right in!
Finally after greeting everyone, the guys took off for the bowling alley, while we got down to business. The bridal shower was themed towards kitchen things (yay!), things that I didn’t have, or needed replaced, which was perfect! Beautifully sharp Wustoff knives (story to come about those), steak knives, towels and mitts to match my kitchen decor, a lovely cake pedestal and dome, and other great gadgets! Also, Mom had passed out recipe cards to everyone to fill out! Fantastic idea, now I have some new family recipes to try!!
Sorry, no strip dancers! Not that I was disappointed in the slightest!! =P
It was a great time, and was very happy that everyone came all the way for this surprise party! One of my aunts had come all the way from Florida! I was definitely caught off guard! Thank you, everyone, and Mom… wow. I probably have no idea how much work and time you put into it, though you told me a little… Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
For the shower, my mom had found a local wedding cake baker, and we got a sample cake, made to look like a light blue present, wrapped in white ribbon with little dark purple flowers scattered all over (my wedding colors!) I’ll post pictures when I have some! I found I didn’t like fondant, which is like the play-dough of cake decorating. Sweet, and otherwise flavorless, it was pretty gummy. I can appreciate why people like it, it produces a beautiful, smooth effect, but I discarded fondant on my slices after the first few bites. It made the cake hard to eat, though the cake itself was a perfect marble cake, very moist and flavorful. (I’ll keep it in mind as we get close to finding our cake-place…)
Afterwards we went to dinner at a local italian restaurant in State College. Not a great time as far as food and service, but the company was redeeming, and Eric and I went through our respective “how well do you know your bride/groom-to-be” books and had a laugh about those while we waited on our meals.

Talk about feeling special, that weekend had me floating! Straight from my parent’s place, we went to Eric’s parents for dinner, which was short and sweet. We shared our cake with them, we arrived with nearly half a cake, and left with about 3 pieces worth left (another yay! don’t think we would have finished it before it went dry!) and then home to unpack.
Unfortunately Eric had to work the next morning, but I had off on Monday and Tuesday, so I felt I had a lazy weekend to recover from my party weekend. I stayed home and caught up on my video games, and a touch of cleaning. Now it’s back to work, for only two more days!
Thank you to everyone to made my weekend special!
Baked onions post-poned to another night…

Totally worth it!
I got an unexpected call from my parents to see if Eric and I wanted to meet them for dinner at Your Place outside of Harrisburg (half way between our homes) and they had a big surprise for me!.. well, both of us!
It’s late now, but pictures and story to come tomorrow! Until the morning…
So, my plans are confirmed and in about 3 hours I’ll be on my way to DC for the weekend! But I was asked one thing by Eric, since I have ruined our plans of doing nothing for the first time since October…
Buffalo chicken dip!
Haha, I have made it three times this year already, and it’s about to come to #4… where there’s football there is always room for chicken dip I suppose. So, I’ll be home in about 50 minutes, then it’s a rush to the grocery store (sadly the closest thing is walmart).
I’ve still got to pack.
Should have plenty of time to still make it on the road by 7… right?
Dip recipe next post!
Last minute plans… maybe?

Girls’ weekend over due! Maybe we’ll start Sunday… more likely Monday, though.
By then, who knows, maybe my cookbooks will be here!
